Why Shaving Vagina Hair Exposes Women To Danger – Gynaecologist

Many in this generation appear to love a clean bikini area, and cannot stand ‘bushy’ pubic zone.

There are some women who cannot stand growing the hair in their vaginas while others have tossed out their razors and waxing kits in favour of growing a fruitful bush.

Among the women that love forest-like bikini area is Maoni Vi from Cape Town, South Africa who set a world record in 2017 for the longest pubic hair, coming in at 28 inches.

But a consultant gynaecologist of Fertility and Gynaecology Centre, Lagos, Dr.Joel Akande in an interview with TheWhistler said while he encourages healthy living, the art and practice of “clean” pelvis is unreasonable.

According to him shaving the bikini area would only give room for illness noting that the entire skin especially vagina is made of Lactobacilli bacteria that helps to keep it healthy.

Noting that most of these bacteria are good, Akande said when the pubic hair is cleaned off it goes together with the good bacteria and welcomes the bad ones.

“Our body has a regulatory balance it must maintain. Good resident bacteria are part of this balance.

Highlighting the different types of illness that are associated with this shaving act, Akande said vagina infection can lead to vaginitis and later womb infection-causing Pelvic inflammatory disease that results in swelling and infertility.

He also stressed that wounds or sores resulting from shaving may allow sexually transmitted infection such as HIV and hepatitis to name a few

“In addition, steaming vagina or adding chemicals or undue reconstruction surgery may cause scarring leading to difficult sex and childbirth.”

Akande, however, advised that those who love to shave the pubic hair should ensure it is not close to the skin.
