Why We Arrested ‘#NorthIsBleeding’ Protesters – FCT Police

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has confirmed the arrest of some protesters who took to the streets of Abuja on Wednesday to demonstrate against incessant killings, abductions and other crimes in northern Nigeria.

The protesters were said to have been arrested around Area 1 in the Garki area of the federal capital.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement made available to THE WHISTLER on Wednesday.

Adeh said the protesters, led by the Revolution Now conveyer, Omoyele Sowore, caused civil disturbance in the area which resulted in a clash between opposing groups, hence the arrest of some of them.

“Consequent upon the above, The team on arrival, took control of the situation, dispersed the assembly and restored normalcy to the situation.

“Parties initially taken into custody for various reasons were profiled and some released unconditionally,” Adeh said.

She said the FCT Police Commissioner, Sunday Babaji, enjoined residents not to relent in cooperating with the police as regards prompt rendition of information.

“The Command also implores residents to report all suspicious movements, emergencies or distresses through the following lines: 08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653 and 08028940883,” the police said.

This website had earlier reported that the protesters used the “#NorthIsBleeding” and “#SecureNorth” slogans to call for President Muhammadu Buhari’s resignation over worsening insecurity in the country.

They want the president to put a stop to activities of terrorists in the region or step aside for a competent hand to address the country’s security challenges.
