Wimbledon: Serena Williams ‘Heartbroken’ After Being Forced Into Retirement By Injury

The 39-year-old American left the court for medical attention, but her return was traumatic as she tied 3-3 before quitting the match.

Williams was targeting a record-tying 24th grand-slam title, but quitting marked her first ever loss in a first-round at Wimbledon.

She said, “I was heartbroken to have to withdraw today after injuring my right leg.

“My love and gratitude are with the fans and the team who make being on centre court so meaningful.
