World Cup: France Oust Uruguay To Reach Semi Finals

Edinson Cavani’s absence from the Uruguay squad was felt as the South Americans were trashed 2 – 0 by France in the Quarter-final of the 2018 World Cup.

The match, which was mostly dominated by the French side, was played on Friday at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane put the Europeans in front with a wonderful header from an Antoine Griezmann free-kick just before the break.

Hugo Lloris made an absolutely stunning save as France got to half-time 1-0 up against Oscar Tabarez’ side.

Griezmann doubled the lead for Les Blues in the 61st minute as he fired at the post from 20 yards. Uruguay goalie Muslera tried to palm it away rather than catch it and then palmed the ball inside his own net.

Griezmann, whose distributions in the match was key to the French victory, has now scored seven goals in six appearances in knock-out stages of major tournaments and he has three at this year’s World Cup.

France team progress through to the last four where they will face the winners of the tie between Brazil and Belgium, who are expected to play later this evening.
