Sweden, who last progressed beyond the second stage in 1994, came close on several occasions and should have taken the lead in the first half when Albin Ekdal blazed his volley over the bar.

Leipzig winger Emil Forsberg got the winning goal in the 66th minute, firing a low shot which deflected off Swizz defender Manuel Akanji into the roof of the net.

Switzerland’s Michael Lang was sent off for a late challenge on Martin Olsson but a VAR decision decided against awarding a penalty.

Sweden team progress through to the last eight where they will face the winners of the tie between England and Colombia.
