WTO DG: Buhari Is A Believer In Merit, Says Presidential Aide As Okonjo-Iweala Takes Office

Social media aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, has said that the emergence of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), is proof that the federal government, contrary to allegations of nepotism, makes decisions based on merit.

Onochie, while congratulating Okonjo-Iweala, stated in a tweet on Monday that Buhari deserved praise for supporting her candidacy from the onset.

“Our very own @NOIweala is officially the Director General of the @wto.

“Thank you to @MBuhari, a believer in merit for his enormous support for Ngozi. Because of this, Nigeria and Africa, have made history. We have no doubt she will deliver, making all of us proud,” she said.

THE WHISTLER reported that Okonjo-Iweala, whose term begins on March 1, said she would “get the global economy going again”.

On her part, she acknowledged the supportive role played by the Buhari administration leading to her emergence as the new WTO DG.
