Anti-immigrant violence has flared sporadically in South Africa against a background of near-record unemployment, with foreigners being accused of criminal activity and taking jobs from locals.

The incidence which targets immigrants took place in Pretoria and Johannesburg, with hundreds of locals ransacking shops and businesses belonging to foreigners, and Nigerians in particular.

The Upper chamber during plenary on Tuesday condemned that attacks, with Senate President promising to set up a committee to visit the South African nation.

It has also been reported that Nigerians were more of the casualties, a situation that prompted some of the lawmakers to recommend hardcore response against South Africa authorities.
