Xmas: Sellers Complain As Buyers Shun Goats Due To High Prices

Goat sellers at some markets in Enugu are complaining about low patronage due to the high cost of the animals.

At Kenyatta market in Enugu metropolis, a seller, Ezekiel Eze, said, “It has never been like this before. Many buyers do come, but when they price, they leave. It looks like this is not Christmas again.

“The prices are really high, but the sellers should not be blamed. We don’t rear goats in Enugu. We buy them from the north.”

Checks by THE WHISTLER on Tuesday show that goats hitherto sold for N25, 000. 00 now sell for N40,000. 00. Those that usually sold for N60, 000 currently go for N120, 000.

A dealer from the north, Mallam Saidu, said, “I brought my goats from Sokoto. It is expensive. If you add the cost of transportation, the prices increase more.

“When customers come, they will price, and when I tell them the price, they leave. Some of them now buy ducks, because they seem cheaper. Chickens are also very expensive; not to talk of cows.”

A buyer, Mrs Chinasa Okoro, said, “I came to buy for an association. Our budget is N30, 000. But from the prices they sell, no goat sells for that amount. The one N30, 000 can buy looks unhealthy. I will return to inform the members. We can check old layers.”

Our correspondent also observed at Obollo-Afor Goat Market that there were fewer goats for sale. Buyers are also not many. The price of the biggest goat at the market is fixed at N120, 000, with the seller vowing not to reduce any amount.

He said, “Nothing will be reduced. It is brought from Maiduguri. The cost of goats has been high since two months ago.”
