Yoruba Nation: Protesters Dare Police, Turn Up For Rally Despite Heavy Security

Protesters demanding secession of the South West region and creation of ‘Yoruba Nation’ from Nigeria have turned out en masse at the Gani Fawehinmi Park in the Ojota area of Lagos State.

This is despite the heavy presence of operatives of the Nigerian Army, police and other security agencies who earlier barricaded the venue on Saturday.

The leaders of the Yoruba Nation movement, Professor Banji Akintoye and Sunday Igboho, amongst others, had earlier insisted that the rally would hold despite police warning and the attack on Igboho’s Ibadan residence by security officials less than 72 hours to the proposed date.

The Department of State services (DSS) had claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it invaded Igboho’s residence on intelligence that he had stockpiled arms in the place.

Meanwhile, the Lagos state police commissioner, Hakeem Odunmosu, had earlier warned that “no rally will be allowed, under whatever guise, in any part of the state.”

However, irate youths of the Yoruba Nation movement have turned up for the protest to demand an end to oppression of their people, amongst other things.
