‘You Have No Right To Regulate University Security’ – Court Tells AGF, NSCDC

The Federal High Court, Abuja on Thursday ruled in favor of the University of Calabar over its claim that the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and two others were interfering in the security operation of the institution.

The Court was presided by Justice N.E Maha.

Emmanuel Omoren appeared for the plaintiff, UNICAL while Kabiru Saidu represented the defendants.

The judge also said that private guards do not fall in the category of those regulated by the third defendant.

Omoren who spoke to THE WHISTLER said that the judge ruled that the NSCDC does not have the jurisdiction to register the department of security in UNICAL.

He also said that by the judgment, the NSCDC cannot compel the university to register a company for the purpose of security guard or compel anyone of them to go and register with them.

According to him, the ruling is a win-win for democracy as it is within the powers of the university to run its own affairs.

“This is a victory for the rule of law; it will put a stop to the impunity of persons appointed to run agencies of both federal and state government.

According to Omoren “nobody except the president of Nigeria can come in and determine how they run a university.”
