Youths Shut Down NDDC Office In Bayelsa

Members of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) have shut down the Bayelsa State office of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The group also blocked the Mbiama-axis of the East-West road for a “mother-of-all protest” against the alleged refusal of the Federal Government to inaugurate a new board for the Niger Delta Development Commission {NDDC).

Scores of youths flying the IYC flag, stopped traffic along the ever-busy East-West road, causing panic among motorists and commuters.

THE WHISTLER had reported a forthnight ago the group’s 30-day ultimatum to the FG which expired on May 25th.

The group had asked the Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, Godwin Akpabio, to constitute the board or risk total shutdown of the Niger Delta.

The president of the group, Peter Timothy Igbifa, was reportedly abducted by men believed to be operatives of the Department of State Services on Tuesday to prevent the IYC from carrying out its threat.

But the protest has gone on despite the absence of Igbifa.

Igbifa was on his way to the International Airport Port Harcourt on Tuesday to board a flight to Abuja for a meeting when a vehicle reportedly blocked him.

He was later whisked away by “masked men. “
