Zamfara: Critics Attack Gov Matawalle For Building Mosque Instead Of Infrastructure

Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, has been criticised after announcing his plan to build a Mosque to replace a demolished structure previously being used by “ritualists” in the state.

Governor Matawalle announced the plan in a tweet on Saturday.

The governor shared a photo of the alleged shrine being demolished in Gusau Local Government Area for the construction of the Mosque.

Matawalle captioned the photo: “Today, I ordered for the immediate construction of mosque in place of the demolished ritualists’ den in Gusau for the benefit of the Muslim neighbourhood.”

He said his administration was, “committed to protecting the dignity of human lives and upholding the religious sanctity of all faithfuls.”

But some Twitter users who commented under the governor’s post criticised him for replacing the alleged shrine with a Mosque instead of an infrastructure.

A Twitter user, @Kamsaleeem1, said: “Your Excellency, my friend is suggesting that the place should’ve been turned into SKILLS ACQUISITION CENTER. That way, it would be of great benefit and sanctity for all FAITHFUL in the community.

@Charlspectacula said: “It should have been something that can contribute to the growth if ur economy, you have more mosque in this ur state than hospitals and schools.”

@Zaharaddeensan: “Building prayers is much more than building a Mosque.”

“Religious leader? So is better continue building mosque all of over the place and forget other utilities? The problem of northern Nigeria will never be solved on time,” @DuruAdigbas said in response to another user who hailed the governor as “a religious leader”

@Sylva_dave: “I believe there is enough mosque in Zamfara state already.. why not consider a skill acquisition centre or school?”

@Osita_Ofoma: “Schools??! Hospitals?? Skill acquisition centre?? These are what you owe your citizens. You don’t owe them a place of worship. If they won’t tell you, I’m saying it here and now.”

@GMEfirst: “Dear Governor @Bellomatawalle1, I think it should be much better if you build worshipers instead of building place of worship. If you build them with economic enabling environment, skills acquisition centres, empowerments, etc they will surely build their mosques themselves.”

@Abduljabbar_5: “But don’t play with our sentiments. Why did you not turn the place into a skills acquisition centre and train people and give them money to start businesses. Don’t u know poverty is very high in Zamfara.”

Some of Twitter users also cricised Matawalle for allegedly using public funds to build a worship place, others criticised him for “hurriedly” ordering the demolition of the structure “without allowing proper inspection or forensic investigation as to determine what was going on in the building.”
