Zamfara May Introduce Death Sentence For Reckless Driving

Following the death of 16 persons as a result of reckless driving, the Zamfara State government has vowed to reintroduce punitive measures which may include the death sentence against drivers involved in the action.

Governor Bello Mattawale stated this when he, alongside the Management of BUA group, paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Gusau, Alhaji Ibrahim Bello.

16 persons had died after a truck had on Wednesday evening lost control and rammed into four vehicles along Gusau/Funtua Road.

Those killed were supporters of Mattawale.

Mattawale, during the visit, also announced a donation of N2m to families of each of the deceased, who had a wife and N1.5m to families of those unmarried among them.

In addition, each of the next of kin of the victims would also receive a monthly allowance of N50,000.

According to Mattawale, as a measure against rough driving, his administration would introduce speed limit gauge on highways as well as weight measurement on trucks and drug tests on drivers.

The measures, the governor added, had become imperative so that drivers and their families would no longer have it easy if they kill anyone, adding that the lives of citizens of the state were more valuable than any other thing.

The governor called on the management of BUA to call their drivers to order and caution them on the acceptable speed limit.
