Zimbabwe: Opposition Alleges Electoral Fraud As One Reported Dead

A man has been shot dead, reports from Zimbabwe say, after opposition supporters went on the rampage in the country’s capital Harare, amid a delay in announcing the winner of Zimbabwe’s presidential election.

The crowds chanted: “We want Chamisa.” They believe the election has been stolen, and are demanding the MDC be announced as winner.

“The army has been called onto the streets of Harare to disperse a violent crowd,” Zimbabwe’s justice minister told ENCA TV.

The opposition MDC Alliance alleges that the ruling Zanu-PF party has rigged Monday’s presidential and parliamentary vote.

Parliamentary results show that the party of President Emmerson Mnangagwa has won two-thirds majority in the national assembly of parliament in the country’s first general election since Robert Mugabe was ousted from power in November 2017.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) on Wednesday announced 122 seats for Zanu-PF so far, and 53 for MDC Alliance, ZBC state media reported. There are 210 seats in the National Assembly’s lower house.

But the result of the presidential poll has not yet been announced, while European Union poll monitors have expressed concern over the length of time it is taking to declare the presidential result.
