Poverty Eradication Bill: Group Urges Senate To Accelerate Passage Into Law

The group in a statement signed by its National coordinator, Comrade James Okoronkwo, lamented that over 112.5, million Nigerians are living below the poverty line.

The group lauded Senator Ibrahim Abdullahi Gobir, representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, for sponsoring the bill.

Gobir, while leading that debate had said that there was a need to create the commission to coordinate and monitor all activities relating to poverty eradication in the country.

According to the group, the overwhelming support by all the senators in plenary during the second reading of the bill is a clear demonstration of the determination of the eighth senate to address poverty in the country.

Okoronkwo noted with delight that the national poverty eradication commission bill, if passed into law, will coordinate and monitor all poverty reduction activities of the Federal Government.

He urged the Senate to ensure that only Nigerians of excellent experience and impeachable character are appointed to head the National Poverty Eradication Commission.

The group lauded the proposed structure of the National Poverty Eradication Commission, which is to be made of five directorates to be headed by a director-general under the supervisor of a chairman and six other members from the six geo-political zones.

The group commended the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration for its crusade against corruption, lamenting that corruption in Nigeria have aggravated the rate of poverty in the country.
