24Hrs After Biden Revoked Trump’s Anti-Abortion Policy, AU Pledges To Cooperate With U.S.

The African Union Commission has pledged to strengthen relations with the United States under the President Joe Biden administration.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said he had pushed for a working relationship with the U.S. in an interaction with its Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, on Friday.

This came a day after the Biden administration revoked an anti-abortion policy ordered by former President Donald Trump.

Mahamat tweeted: “I had a good conversation with @SecBlinken today. I congratulated the Biden Administration for returning to the Paris Climate Agreement and reaffirming support to @WHO. We are committed to revitalize our partnership based on shared values of multilateralism and international cooperation.”

On Thursday, Antony Blinken disclosed that the Biden administration had signed a policy guaranteeing women’s rights, including the right to abortion.

He also stressed that the administration would push for it globally.

“In the Biden-Harris administration, the empowerment and protection of women and girls, including promoting their sexual and reproductive health and rights, is a central part of U.S. foreign policy and national security,” he stated.

Recall that the Trump administration had in 2017, ordered relevant authorities “to ensure that U.S. taxpayer dollars do not fund organizations or programs that support or participate in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization.”
