After 12-Year Vacancy, 151 Markets Elect New Iyeki Of Edo

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to women empowerment, family stability, and community growth.

The governor spoke at the inauguration of new executives of market leaders in Edo State, where Pastor Josephine Ibhaguezejele was formally installed as the new Iyeki.

The event took place at the New Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City.

Represented by the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Edesili Anani, Okpebholo said marketplaces would play a central role in his vision for Edo.

“Our administration places a premium on women’s economic advancement. We are determined to lift women, strengthen families, and build stronger communities,” he said.

“Your leadership will shape the peace and productivity of our markets.”

The governor pledged continued government backing for traders and market leaders, adding that under his watch, Edo markets would become hubs of economic growth, cultural pride, and sustainable development.

Iyaloja General of Nigeria, Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, who presided over the inauguration, stressed that no leader was displaced in the process.

“We don’t unseat anyone unless there is gross misconduct. The position is monarchical in nature. I am here to formally inaugurate Pastor Josephine Ibhaguezejele as the new Iyeki of Edo State,” she said.

In her acceptance speech, Pastor Ibhaguezejele expressed gratitude and pledged to serve with fairness and dedication.

“This seat has been vacant for 12 years. Today, leaders of 151 of the 152 markets in Edo came together for this inauguration. I will justify the confidence reposed in me,” she stated.

Commissioner for Women Affairs, Bisi Idaomi, pledged that Edo women would continue to be central in politics and governance.

“We assure you that a significant portion of the votes pledged to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 will come from Edo women,” she said.

Commissioner for Health, Cyril Oshomohole, described the inauguration as a celebration of women as the backbone of the economy.

“This is a call to accountability, fairness, and unity. Market women are the engine of our economy, and their leadership must reflect that,” he said.
