Babachir’s Suspension Long Overdue – SAN

Mallam Yusuf Ali, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari over the suspension of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, saying it is long overdue.

Ali, who said this in a chat with Punch on Wednesday, explained that Babachir’s suspension will remove doubts in the minds of Nigerians about President Buhari’ sincerity to fight corruption.

“I think the President has done what is expected of him, because the man was holding such a high office.

“His indictment by the Senate concerning the IDP issue strips him any moral authority.

“Although his suspension was long overdue, the President did it eventually. I salute the President for that,” Ali said.

It would be recalled that President Buhari had earlier written the Nigerian Senate, clearing Babachir of any wrong doing despite the SGF’s indictment by the upper legislative arm.

But in an unforeseen development, the president ordered the SGF’s suspension as well as that of the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Ayo Oke, over the latter’s link with the $43 million Osborn cash haul.

President Buhari has also instituted a three-man Committee headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo with a view of investigating the matter and coming up with a report within 14 days.
