Confusion As Senate Presents Different Figures For 2026 Budget

Conflicting figures have emerged in the 2026 budget proposal presented to a joint session of the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu on Friday.

While the figure contained in the document presented to the legislature by the President was N58.18tn, a version of the document read and debated by the Senate on Tuesday, stated N58.47tn as the total budget sum.

The version of the proposal, on which the Senate debated and passed the document through second reading, read, “A Bill for an Act to authorise the issue from Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation the total sum of N58, 472, 628, 944, 759 of which N4, 097, 381, 103, 856 is for statutory transfers.

In the document debated by the Senate, Debt service is to gulp N15, 909, 361, 631, 657 while N15, 251, 538, 827, 423 will go for recurrent (Non Debt) expenditure and capital expenditure put at N23, 214, 347, 371, 824.

The figures were presented for debate by the chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Olamilekan Solomon Adeola.
