Court Halts Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement

The Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State, has halted the enforcement of the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police’s controversial tinted glass permit requirement for vehicle owners.

In an interim order issued on Friday, the court directed the police to maintain the status quo and respect ongoing judicial processes until further hearings in the matter.

The ruling came as proceedings opened in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025, filed by human rights lawyer John Aikpokpo-Martins against the IGP and the Police Force.

The suit challenges the legality of the renewed enforcement drive on tinted glass permits.

Confirming the order, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kunle Edun, who led the petitioner’s legal team, described the decision as “a significant step towards safeguarding the rule of law pending the determination of the substantive issues before the court.”

The development comes amid criticism from the Nigerian Bar Association and other stakeholders, who have argued that the police clampdown on tinted glass permits is unlawful and prone to abuse.
