Enugu Police Nab Drug Peddler Posing As Dispatch Rider

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command attached to the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Squad have arrested a suspected illicit drug peddler disguised as a dispatch rider and recovered a large quantity of restricted tramadol drugs in Enugu.

The arrest took place on January 18, 2026, at about 6:13 a.m. during a routine security surveillance patrol in the Uwani area of the state.

The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Desmond Obodo Chilota, was intercepted while conveying the illicit drugs on a red Kymco motorcycle. Both the drugs and the motorcycle were recovered by the operatives.

In a related development, the SWAT operatives, during the same patrol at about 7:12 a.m., recovered an abandoned bag containing substances suspected to be crystal methamphetamine, popularly known as “Mkpuru-mmiri,” along with an Android mobile phone at Onu-Asata in the Ogui area of Enugu.

“The suspected drug peddlers reportedly fled on sighting the police, abandoning the items.”

Police stated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, while the arrested suspect and the recovered exhibits are undergoing further investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to sustained patrols and intelligence-led operations to curb drug-related and other criminal activities in the state.

He also urged residents to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and supportive of the police in the fight against crime.
