Former UNN VC, Prof Igwe, Dies Of Heart Attack

A former Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof Charles Igwe, has died of a heart attack.

Prof Igwe, who held sway as UNN VC from 2019 to 2024, reportedly slumped and died on Sunday, December 28, 2025.

Professor Igwe, it was gathered, is a soil scientist, who was involved in decades of teaching, research, and administration at UNN.

The late VC was born on 23 August 1958, and served as the 15th Vice‑Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). He was recognized for his research in tropical soil stability and his administrative leadership in Nigerian higher education.

Igwe joined the services of UNN in 1976 as a soil survey assistant. He became an academic staff in 1976. He was appointed the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) in 2016 and re-appointed in 2018.

Neither UNN nor Prof Igwe’s family has issued any official statement on the passing away of the late scholar.

A UNN scholar, however, confirmed to THE WHISTLER that, “Prof Igwe is dead; I called the family.” The scholar however declined to be mentioned, stating that “I’m neither the spokesman of UNN nor authorized by Igwe’s family to announce his death.”
