Group Writes APC, Calls For Return Of Ambode As Lagos Governor

A political advocacy group, Ambode Comeback Crusaders, has formally written to the National and Lagos State Chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging the party to support the return of Mr Akinwunmi Ambode as the governor of Lagos State in the 2027 general elections.

Ambode, who was elected governor in 2015, left office in 2019 after he lost the APC governorship ticket to the current governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

In an open letter dated September 28, 2025, the group’s convener, Abiodun Fashola, praised Ambode’s leadership during his first term, highlighting his achievements in infrastructure development, public transportation, and healthcare reforms.

The letter emphasised Ambode’s strong financial management, which positioned Lagos as a leading economic hub both nationally and internationally.

“Ambode’s vision for Lagos continues to resonate with citizens, promoting inclusivity and sustainability,” Fashola stated.

He further noted Ambode’s ability to engage stakeholders and listen to the populace as key strengths that underline his commitment to good governance.

The letter appeals to the APC leadership to consider the broader implications of endorsing Ambode for a second term, arguing that his proven track record aligns with the party’s goals for progress and development in Lagos State.

“By endorsing his return, we can harness his experience and dedication to propel Lagos into a new era of prosperity and innovation.

“As you deliberate on candidates for the upcoming elections, I urge you to consider the broader implications of Ambode’s second term. His proven track record and vision for the future align seamlessly with APC’s commitment to progress and development. Let us reaffirm our commitment to a better Lagos under his continued leadership,” Fashola noted.

The letter was copied to notable political figures, including President Bola Tinubu, Governor Sanwo-Olu, and former Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, as well as other stakeholders.

In August, Ambode dismissed claims linking him to a governorship ambition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), reaffirming his support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

In a statement, he described the reports as “false publications” aimed at causing distractions.

“I wish to publicly reaffirm my absolute and unshakeable loyalty to the APC, the party under which I had the privilege of serving Lagos State as governor in 2015, and to President Bola Tinubu, my leader, mentor, and a tireless champion for Nigeria’s progress,” Ambode said.

He urged party members and Nigerians to disregard political distractions.

“Let it be clear: I stand solidly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress. We will work together to ensure victory in 2027 to continue delivering the dividends of democracy to all Nigerians,” Ambode concluded.
