Kano Teacher Docked Over Rape Of Four Sisters

An Islamic teacher, Kamal Abdulmumini, could face a death sentence or life imprisonment if convicted of raping four sisters, including a set of twins, in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State.

Abdulmumini, a tutor at Alhadid Nursery and Primary School, was arraigned before Justice Suleiman Baba Na Mallam of the Kano State High Court on Tuesday over the alleged offence.

The prosecutor, Barrister Abdullahi Mohammad, who doubles as Director of Public Prosecution in the Kano State Ministry of Justice, told the court that the defendant had sexual relations with the four siblings on separate occasions in his office. He said five witnesses were ready to testify against the defendant.

The arraignment stalled after the defence counsel, Barrister Nasir Abdurrahman, asked the court to grant him access to case-related documents and facilities to enable him prepare an adequate defence for his client. The prosecution did not object to the request.

Justice Na Mallam thereafter ordered the prosecution to furnish the defendant with the relevant materials and adjourned the matter to October 13 and 14, 2026, for arraignment and hearing.

Under Section 126 of the Kano State Penal Code, rape is defined, while Section 127 prescribes a minimum sentence of 14 years and a maximum of life imprisonment without an option of fine for anyone found guilty. Under the Sharia Penal Code of Kano State, however, a conviction for rape attracts the death penalty by stoning.
