Kebbi Rep Seeks Strengthened Security Infrastructure In Rural Communities

The member representing Birnin Kebbi/Kalgo/Bunza Federal Constituency, Hon. Ibrahim Mohammed, has called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to strengthen security infrastructure in rural communities across Kebbi State and other parts of the country affected by insecurity.

Raising a motion of urgent public importance on the floor of the House, the lawmaker expressed concern over the worsening state of insecurity in Kebbi State, particularly in rural areas where banditry, cattle rustling, and kidnapping have become rampant.

He noted that incessant attacks by criminal elements have left communities in fear, with many residents abandoning their homes and farmlands. “Farmers are being forced to flee their farms, schools have been closed down, and families have been displaced”

He warned that the situation poses a serious threat to food security and rural development.

Citing Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which states that the primary responsibility of government is to ensure the security and welfare of its citizens, the lawmaker urged the Federal Ministry of Interior and the Nigeria Police Force to take immediate action.

He called for the establishment and upgrade of police outposts and security stations in rural flashpoints, the deployment of additional personnel, and the provision of essential logistics including patrol vehicles, surveillance gadgets, and communication tools.

Mohammed also pressed the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning to include rural security infrastructure as a priority in the 2026 budget estimates, noting that “without adequate funding, even the best policy intentions will remain on paper.”

He also appealed to State Governments, Traditional Institutions, and Community-Based Organisations to work closely with security agencies in intelligence gathering and peacebuilding efforts.

To ensure a coordinated response, the lawmaker further requested that the House mandate its Committees on National Security and Intelligence, Police Affairs, and Army to assess existing security gaps in rural communities and recommend policy and budgetary interventions to address them.

He emphasized that restoring peace in rural Kebbi and other affected areas is crucial to reviving agricultural productivity and sustaining community life.

“Our people deserve to live and work without fear. Strengthening rural security is not just about protection, it is about preserving hope and livelihood”
