“He has been released,” a friend of his who did not want his name mentioned said. “Ransom was paid. I was told it was crowd-funded because Caleb’s family couldn’t raise the amount demanded. The good news is that he has regained his freedom.

“He is admitted in a hospital for medical checks. He is frail, and must have gone through torture and distress. The government needs to do more in security. Being reactive doesn’t help us. The state should be proactive. These kidnappers have overwhelmed us.”

The victim, an Enugu-based pharmacist, reportedly returned to his country home, Orba, to settle a family dispute when he was allegedly waylaid and whisked away by the kidnappers.

It was alleged that his kidnappers placed a N50m ransom for his release.
