Engineer Saidu Mohammed has withdrawn his appointment as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Seplat Energy Plc following his recent nomination as Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
Seplat Energy had previously announced on 17 December 2025 that Engineer Mohammed would join the Company’s Board effective 1 January 2026.
However, the Company confirmed that it received formal notification today from Mohammed declining the position, citing a conflict of interest arising from his new regulatory role.
In a statement, to the NGX seen by THE WHISTLER, Seplat Energy congratulated Engineer Mohammed on his appointment as NMDPRA CEO, describing it as a “significant national assignment” and expressed confidence that his leadership would contribute positively to the Nigerian petroleum industry.
The Company also reiterated its commitment to updating the market on any future appointment to fill the vacant Board position.
The development underscores the delicate balance between private sector leadership and public service roles in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, where regulatory oversight and corporate governance often intersect.

Analysts note that appointments to independent boards can be impacted by such conflicts, ensuring transparency and compliance with governance standards.
Seplat Energy’s communication with investors and stakeholders highlights its adherence to corporate governance best practices, even as the Company continues to strengthen its leadership team in line with its strategic objectives.
