NCoS Declares All Prisons ‘Red Zones’ Ahead Of Protest For Nnamdi Kanu’s Release
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has declared all correctional centres across the country as “Red Zones” ahead of the nationwide protests scheduled for Monday to demand the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, the NCoS warned that all correctional facilities remain restricted areas and should not be approached by unauthorized persons during or after the protests.
“In light of the planned nationwide protest scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, calling for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the public is hereby informed that all correctional centres are declared as Red Zones,” the statement read.
Abubakar stressed that the declaration was a precautionary measure to prevent any security breaches or incidents that could endanger lives and property.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service reiterates that correctional centres are restricted areas, and anyone who has no official business therein should stay off to avoid any untoward incidents or security breaches,” he warned.
The Service also appealed for public cooperation and calm, and urged citizens to respect security measures and work with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace.

“The Service urges all citizens to exercise caution and cooperate with security agencies to ensure a peaceful and safe environment for everyone. It is equally important to respect restricted areas such as correctional facilities,” the statement added.
Recall separate groups have announced plans to stage demonstrations on Monday — some in support of Nnamdi Kanu’s release, and others opposing it.
