The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has dismissed a viral TikTok video depicting unethical conduct between correctional officers and inmates at a custodial centre.
In a statement at the weekend, the NCoS Public Relations Officer, J.N. Osuji, described the video as false and misleading.
It said the video did not originate from any Nigerian Correctional Service custodial centre and described it as fabricated to misrepresent the institution.
According to the NCoS, a careful assessment of the footage revealed a staged scene similar to a movie set rather than a real correctional environment.
“The video in question is not authentic and did not emanate from any Nigerian Correctional Service custodial facility,” the Service stated, adding that several visible inconsistencies clearly expose it as fictitious.

The NCoS further noted that the uniforms worn by individuals portrayed as officers in the video do not align with the current official uniforms of the Service.
Similarly, the clothing worn by the supposed inmates do not conform to standard inmate uniforms used across custodial centres nationwide.
The NCoS added that the physical appearance of those presented as inmates violates established custodial regulations.
“Inmates are not permitted to keep dreadlocks or hairstyles contrary to approved grooming standards,” the statement said, stressing that this alone casts serious doubt on the authenticity of the video.
While reaffirming its openness to public scrutiny and accountability, the NCoS warned that it would not tolerate spreading false narratives aimed at undermining public confidence, compromising institutional integrity, or inciting public misunderstanding.

The Service urged members of the public to rely only on verified and official sources for information concerning its operations and to disregard content that is clearly fictional, misleading, or malicious.
