Nigeria Wins All African Para Badminton Championships

The All African Para Badminton Championships 2025, hosted by Nigeria in Umuahia, has concluded with Team Nigeria emerging victorious at the top of the medals chart.

The Nigerian team won an impressive 36 medals, consisting of 10 gold, 13 silver, and 13 bronze medals.

Twelve countries participated in the championships, which featured 19 events. The National Olympic Committee of Kenya secured second place with 11 medals, including 4 gold, 2 silver, and 5 bronze medals. Egypt claimed the third spot with 8 medals, comprising 3 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze medals.

During the closing ceremony on Sunday, held at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, described the event as a celebration of resilience and unity.

Represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, Governor Otti expressed gratitude to all participating countries,

“You have all brought your colours, cultures, and courage to our country. Together, we have written a beautiful history of inclusion through sports. One that will echo across Africa, years to come,” he said.

The Governor also acknowledged the Badminton World Federation and the Badminton Confederation of Africa for their unwavering partnership and professionalism,

“We have not only shared a championship, we have built friendship and taken order, and built us together as one sporting family.

“He assured the athletes that they would always be remembered for their courage and character, saying “You have all won in courage and character.”

Governor Otti extended his congratulations to the winners and expressed his willingness to host the event again next year, noting that Nigeria is inspired by hosting the championship.

“As we prepare to depart, may you carry with you the warmth, friendship, and hospitality from Umuahia. Let the memories of your time here remain with you, that Abia welcomes the world, and the world is always welcome to Abia,” he stated.

The President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Francis Orbih, expressed his delight and satisfaction with the successful completion of the tournament.

Orbih praised the athletes for their remarkable display of courage, skill, and determination,

“The athletes have not only competed with excellence but have also inspired people with their resilience and sportsmanship spirit,” he said.

Orbih extended his profound gratitude to the Governor and people of Abia State for their support and commended the event partners, sponsors, and organizing committees for their hard work.

In an interview, Abia State Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George, stated that the competition has showcased Abia to the world.

He revealed that Governor Otti has given express approval for the state to host the All African Para Badminton Championship again.

“The Governor has given us the green light to start preparations for next year’s championship,” he said.

Comrade George commended the athletes, coaches, and the local organizing committee for their contributions to the championship’s success.

“The competition has exposed Abia to the world, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to host such a prestigious event,” George noted.
