Power Crisis Hits Again As National Grid Collapses

The national power grid has once again collapsed, plunging several parts of the country into darkness and disrupting electricity supply to millions of households and businesses.

Reports indicate that electricity generation dropped sharply from over 4,500 megawatts to as low as 24 megawatts by about 1:30pm.

This is the first grid collapse recorded in 2026, occurring barely weeks after a similar incident on December 29, 2025, which also triggered widespread power outages nationwide.

THE WHISTLER reports that national grid which has been collapsing in recent years have been linked to a mix of technical faults, poor maintenance of transmission infrastructure and fluctuations in generation capacity, prompting repeated calls for stronger contingency measures.

In the latest incident, 23 power generation plants connected to the national grid reportedly lost output, resulting in zero power allocation to all 11 electricity distribution companies.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the collapse had not been immediately determined, and officials of the Transmission Company of Nigeria were yet to issue a detailed statement.

The latest disruption has once again raised concerns about the state of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure and its capacity to meet the country’s growing demand for reliable power.
