“The driver of the vehicle was shot while the second one paid the supreme sacrifice in the ensuing gun duel,” the source said.

In the viral video, the patrol van was seen engulfed in flames. Passersby were heard expressing worries of the action of the gunmen.

“The head of one of the operatives was shattered,” one of the sympathisers said, adding that, “These are family people. It is unfortunate.”

Meanwhile, Enugu State Police Command is yet to issue a statement on the development. Its Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, did not respond to inquiries advanced to him on the incident.

Some residents have called on relevant authorities to fish out the perpetrators.

A security consultant, Charles Okpara, said, “This should be tackled with all seriousness. Otherwise, the hoodlums might resume their ugly activities which halted for sometime following the launch of the state Security Control Room. If nothing is done to capture these criminal, the feeling might be that the purported control room is just a political statement.”

Johnson Uwakwe, a student, charged the state to use its newly acquired drone to arrest the perpetrators. “Let a statement be made this time around. With the drone, I think they won’t free. Enugu has been peaceful of late.”
