Senate May Pass N58.4trn 2026 Budget March 17

The Senate on Friday through its committee on Appropriations, tentatively fixed Tuesday, 17th March 2026 for the final consideration and passage of N48.472 trillion 2026 federal budget.

The committee, at an interactive session at the National Assembly on Friday, fixed 2nd to 13th February for the consideration of the budget estimates at the various committee level.

Also, the committee has fixed Monday, 9th February, 2026 for an all inclusive public hearing on the budget proposal.

The chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, disclosed that a professor of Economics from University of Lagos, Wasiu Adeoye, will make power points presentation.

As outlined by the committee, Thursday, 5th March has been fixed for an interactive session between members of the committee and the Federal Government’s economic management team.

The Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun and his Budget and National Planning counterpart, Senator Atiku Bagudu are expected to lead the government’s team.

According to the Appropriations committee chairman, the various Senate committees are expected to submit reports of budget defence on the various MDAs they oversight, from 16th to 23rd February.

The reports, he said, would then be presented to the Senate in session on March 17 for consideration and possible passage.

Senator Adeola informed members of his committee that the Senate had wanted the budget passed on the 12th of March, 2026, but that he pleaded with the leadership for additional one week.

“For meticulous scrutiny and consideration of the budget estimates, hard copies of the 2026 budget proposal have been printed for chairmen and members of the various standing committees,” Adeola said.
