Super Eagles Defender Ruled Out Of World Cup Qualifiers

Werder Bremen have confirmed that Felix Agu has been ruled out of action for several months with a syndesmosis ligament injury.

The Super Eagles defender picked up the injury in the club’s 1-0 win over St. Pauli last weekend, and he is expected to be out of action for a long time.

Consequently, Agu will not be able to participate in Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers clash against Lesotho, and Benin Republic after he was initially included in the squad.

Werder Bremen confirmed his injury with a statement on their website on Monday.

The statement read: “The Nigerian international sustained a syndesmosis ligament injury in the 1-0 home win against FC St. Pauli and will be out of the Green-Whites’ squad for several months. This was confirmed by an MRI and X-ray examination conducted by team doctor Robert Gorzolla on Monday morning.

“The various treatment options are currently being reviewed, and a decision will be made soon.”

Werder Bremen coach, Horst Steffen, said the club will provide the necessary support to allow Agu return to action as soon as possible.

He said: “I’m incredibly sorry for Felix. We will do everything we can to get him fit again as quickly as possible.

“Unfortunately, however, we have to assume that Felix will be out of action for the foreseeable future.”

Agu made his Super Eagles debut against Jamaica at the Unity Cup in London in May.

The 26-year-old was born in Germany, and he has represented the European country at the U-21 level before he decided to play for Nigeria.
