The United States is deepening its partnership with Nigeria through a high-level diplomatic mission led by Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker, who is spearheading efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation on security challenges, economic development, and protection of vulnerable populations across the country.
Hooker, who arrived in Abuja on Wednesday, will lead U.S. and Nigerian officials in the U.S.–Nigeria Joint Working Group, which is a newly established platform designed to coordinate bilateral efforts on pressing issues including counter-terrorism, protection of vulnerable communities, and expanded U.S. investment opportunities.
This was according to a statement by the U.S. State Department’s spokesperson on Wednesday.
The statement noted that the visit, which runs from January 21 through 29, is part of a diplomatic mission focused on deepening cooperation between the U.S. and Nigeria.
“In Nigeria, the Under Secretary will serve as the head of delegation for the U.S.–Nigeria Joint Working Group and will support the administration’s efforts to protect Christian communities, counter terrorism, and expand U.S. investment opportunities,” the statement said.
The development comes amid longstanding security challenges in Nigeria, driven by armed groups such as Boko Haram and other violent extremists operating in the northern and central regions.

Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to President Bola Tinubu, confirmed the development on his official X handle on Thursday.
The U.S. has previously invested in multi-year programmes to support Nigeria’s counter-terrorism capacity, border security, and civil society engagement against violent extremism.
Hooker is expected to also hold discussions with Nigerian counterparts on ways to facilitate U.S. private sector investment and create opportunities that would generate employment for young Nigerians.
Hooker will also travel to Muscat, Oman, and Manama, Bahrain, where she will lead separate strategic dialogues with host governments.
“In Oman and Bahrain, the Under Secretary will lead two separate strategic dialogues and advance cooperation across a range of security, economic, and cultural interests,” the statement said.
