We’re Small But Ready To Protect VIPs, Says NSCDC Boss

The Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr Ahmed Audi, says the corps is prepared to take on expanded responsibilities in providing protection for Very Important Persons (VIPs), in line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu.

Audi made this known on Tuesday during the CG’s quarterly meeting with senior officers at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja.

He reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that despite manpower constraints, the NSCDC remains dedicated to safeguarding Nigerians as well as Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI).

“Despite our size, we are not complaining, as this assignment is one the corps is ready to tackle. It is a welcome idea,” he said.

The announcement follows President Tinubu’s recent directive for the withdrawal of police officers from individuals.

Audi stated that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss strategies and modalities for implementing the VIP protection mandate effectively.

He disclosed that the corps will engage in strategic consultations with stakeholders across various sectors to ensure seamless execution of the newly assigned duty.

He clarified that VIP protection was not new to the corps, noting that NSCDC operatives have long been involved in such roles alongside other security agencies.

“We have been part of it alongside other agencies. It is important to note that we get trained by the military, especially our special forces,” he added.

The CG also revealed that the ongoing recruitment exercise by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) would further boost the corps’ manpower and enhance its operational capacity.

Audi urged state commandants and heads of formations to discharge their duties diligently, warning that laxity would attract sanctions.

“We will strengthen the monitoring mechanism on the performance of heads of formations nationwide, to check what they do and assess them,” he said.

The NSCDC boss commended personnel for their professionalism, resilience, and commitment to the service’s mandate.
