Abia Govt Commends NURTW For Maintaining Peace In Motor Parks

The Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Dr Chimezie Ukaegbu, has commended the National Union of Transport Workers (NURTW), Abia State Council, for its peaceful conduct, discipline, and orderly operations across motor parks in the state, describing the union as a key partner in sustaining peace within the transport sector.

Dr Ukaegbu gave the commendation during the end-of-year party and mega empowerment programme organised by the union at its state headquarters, Ohiya Park, Umuahia, where over 500 bags of rice were distributed to members.

Speaking at the occasion, the Commissioner praised the leadership of the NURTW for successfully carrying other transport unions along as the lead union, noting that such inclusive leadership has helped to entrench peace and stability in Abia’s motor parks. He stated that the calm atmosphere currently enjoyed in parks, free from the usual clashes and bloodshed, aligns with the Abia Serenity agenda of Governor Alex Otti’s administration.

Dr Ukaegbu expressed appreciation to Comrade Azode for the union’s consistent support for the state government and urged members to sustain their cooperation with the present administration. He advised drivers to refrain from reckless driving, driving against traffic, and other unsafe practices that could endanger lives.

The Commissioner also noted that he was proud to have facilitated the return and proper engagement of the NURTW in the state’s transport framework, stressing that the union has justified that decision through its conduct. He assured transport workers that the state government would continue to carry them along in policies and projects, including plans for electric buses, transport terminals, and water transport, which he said would involve union participation.

Commending the empowerment initiative, Dr Ukaegbu described the distribution of over 500 bags of rice as a remarkable act of leadership and compassion. He noted that such a gesture, though not obligatory, reflects Comrade Azode’s dedication to rewarding hard work and promoting the welfare of union members.

In his remarks, Hon. Obioma Nwogbe, the SSA on Transport, also applauded the NURTW leadership for maintaining peace and discipline, describing the empowerment programme as timely and impactful.

Earlier, Comrade Chukwuma Azode, while addressing members, thanked them for their good behaviour and peaceful disposition throughout the year, explaining that the rice distribution was meant to reward loyalty, encourage unity, and reassure members that their welfare remains a priority.

He appreciated the Commissioner for Transport for serving as a dependable bridge between the union and the state government and reaffirmed the union’s unwavering support for Governor Alex Otti’s administration.

Comrade Azode commended the state government for improved road infrastructure, noting that better roads have eased transportation and reduced frequent visits to mechanics. He also praised the administration for strengthening security across highways and major routes, which has significantly curbed criminal activities and boosted travellers’ confidence.

Describing the empowerment as just the beginning, the NURTW chairman assured members that more welfare initiatives would follow to reward diligence and commitment. He urged members to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), stressing that civic responsibility remains vital to good governance.

He concluded by cautioning drivers against reckless driving, drinking and driving, and other forms of misconduct, while also urging them to keep motor parks clean and continue to uphold peace and unity in line with the development vision of the Abia State Government.

The event was attended by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, Hon. Obioma Nwogbe; the State Chairman of NURTW, Comrade Chukwuma Azode (popularly known as China); union executives; and members drawn from different parts of the state.
