Abia Lawmaker Raises Alarm Over Erosion Menace, Seeks Immediate Intervention

Member, Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Kalu Mba representing Ohafia South State Constituency has raised an alarm over the worsening erosion menace along the Elu/Amuke Road in Ohafia Local Government Area.

The lawmaker, in a matter of urgent public importance presented to the house during its plenary session on Tuesday, lamented the deplorable state of the road, which has resulted in the destruction of farmlands, economic trees, and disruption of socio-economic activities in the area.

“The erosion site had previously been identified for intervention under the European Union-funded NEWMAP project, but was unjustly removed from the list due to alleged vested political interests of a former NEWMAP Project Coordinator,” he said.

He also informed the house that the Ohafia Improvement Union (OIU) had written a Save Our Soul letter to the Speaker, pleading for the intervention of the Assembly in re-including the Elu/Amuke erosion site in the NEWMAP project.

Mba prayed the House to direct NEWMAP to re-include the Elu/Amuke erosion site in the list of erosion sites to be undertaken by them in the 2026 European Union intervention projects, revalidate the Engineering Design of the Elu/Amuke Ohafia road, conduct the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) and the Environmental and Safeguard Management Plan (ESMP) of the Elu/Amuke Ohafia Road, and commence work on the road under the European Union intervention project for the year 2026 or subsequent year.

The House has since resolved to take immediate action on the matter, with the Speaker directing the relevant committees to look into the issue and report back to the House.
