Afenifere Diaspora USA Lauds Tinubu Over Change Of Service Chiefs

The Afenifere Diaspora USA has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to amend the security architecture and change the Service Chiefs, saying that Nigeria’s democracy remains sacrosanct.

In a statement issued on Saturday, and signed by its Chairman, Prof. Sikiru Fadairo and Secretary, Comrade David Adeyinka Adenekan, the group emphasised that Nigeria’s fragile democracy must be protected from detractors and fifth columnists.

The group gave its full backing to the changes, describing it as typical of a knowledgeable Commander-in-Chief who knows when to act.

Afenifere Diaspora USA urged Nigerians not to link the shakeup to the recently-rumoured coup attempt, reaffirming its belief that military incursion into democratic rule is an aberration.

The group also cautioned Northern Leaders, including the Sultan of Sokoto, not to overheat the polity with vituperative statements that could cause disaffection and animosity between the Igbos and Yorubas.

“Suffice it to say, in less than 2 years, Nigeria voters will have another chance to go to the poll to re-elect the incumbent President or, sack him through the ballot to elect a new President if he chooses to contest for a second term as permissible under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”, the group stated.

It reminded that the presidency is not the exclusive right of any section and that there is an unwritten constitution that the position will be rotated between the North and South.

The group noted that former President Muhammadu Buhari’s scorecards on insecurity and poverty were poor, and President Tinubu’s scorecards are not fairer, with rising insecurity and hunger in the land.

The group queried why Northern elites did not publicly chastise Buhari or demand his replacement with a Southern President in 2019, and appealed to Northern Leaders not to fan the embers of disunity or provoke war between the Igbos and Yorubas.

Afenifere Diaspora USA called on Southern Nigerians to reconcile their differences and work together to settle for a consensus candidate to restructure the country for true federalism.

The group declared that people of Southern Nigeria should be wise, and that together, both the North and South can change the trajectory to develop a new constitutional framework based on justice, fairness, and equity for true nation-building.

“People of Southern Nigeria, Be Very Wise! Reconcile your differences and work together to settle for a consensus candidate to carry out the Agenda to restructure the country for true federalism to be established and consolidated. Yes, together, both the North and South can change the trajectory to develop a new constitutional framework based on justice, fairness and equity for a true nation building. We are all in it together!,” the group said.
