The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a male suspect, 26, Anikpe Chibuike, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu, 35.
Officers attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, had arrested the suspect on January 7, nearly a month after the incident.
The incident occurred at about midnight on December 9, 2025, in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of the State.
A press release by the police on Sunday revealed that the suspect stabbed the victim, a single mother, in the neck with a knife over alleged infidelity.
The police said, upon Mmadubugwu’s death, the suspect dropped a fake letter claiming he had been kidnapped by people he owed money to.
The police described the act as one intended to “mislead investigators and aid his escape from the crime scene.”

During interrogation, the suspect confessed to having gone bankrupt, thus becoming a chronic debtor.
He said the entire situation made him emotionally distressed, because he had also attempted to establish a business for the victim, which led to the fatal confrontation.
Meanwhile, the police debunked claims circulating that the crime was committed by persons the suspect owed money to, describing such reports as false and misleading.
The police noted that as part of ongoing investigative procedures, detectives have visited the mortuary where the deceased’s body was deposited.
“The Command notes that the tragic incident has sparked outrage and renewed conversations around domestic violence and relationship-related crimes within the community.
