CAF Slams $930,000 Fine On Morocco, Senegal Over AFCON Final Chaos

…Senegal Coach Gets Five-Match Ban

The Confederation of African Football has imposed a total of $930,000 on Morocco and Senegal for the chaotic scene at the 2025 Nations Cup final.

It would be recalled that the final degenerated into chaos in the closing moments when Senegal’s goal was disallowed for a foul on Hakimi.

A few minutes later, Morocco were awarded a contentious penalty, leading Senegal players to stage a walk out from the field before they returned after 20 minutes.

Brahimi Diaz missed the resulting penalty with Mendy saving his panenka effort comfortably.

The match then went to extra time and Pape Gueye scored to give Senegal a second AFCON title.

CAF accused Senegal, and Morocco of violating the CAF Disciplinary Code, principles of fair play and integrity during the game in a statement on their website.

The statement read: “Mr Pape Bouna Thiaw was also fined USD 100,000.

“To fine the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), USD 300,000 for the unsporting conduct of their players and technical staff in violation of the CAF Disciplinary Code principles of fair play, loyalty and integrity. The unsporting conduct of their players and the technical staff also brought the game into disrepute.

“To fine the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), USD 15,000 for the misconduct of its national team, due to five (5) of its players having received cautions.”

“The CAF Disciplinary Board rejected the protest lodged by the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football regarding alleged violations by the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football of Articles 82 and 84 of the Regulations of the Africa Cup of Nations, relating to the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final.”

Senegalese coach Pape Bouna Thiaw was banned for five official CAF matches for his “unsporting conduct” and “for bringing the game into disrepute, and was also fined $100,000.

Senegal’s Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye, and Ismaila Sarr were handed two match bans each for unsporting behaviour towards the referee.

The Senegalese Football Association were fined a total of $615,000 for the improper conduct of its supporters, players, and staff, unsportsmanlike behaviour and the five yellow cards their players received in the final.

The Moroccan Football Federation was handed a total of $315,000.

A sum of $200, 000 for ball boys inappropriate behaviour, and $100,000 for improper conduct of their players, and coaching staff with an additional fine of
$15,000 for the use of lasers.

The Atlas Lions Captain, Achraf Hakimi was also handed a two match ban, one of which is suspended for one year.

Another Moroccan player, Ismael Saibari was also suspended for three matches with a fine of $100,000.
