Davido’s Alleged Insults Disappointing, Says Reno Omokri

Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has responded to Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, following a social media exchange in which the singer allegedly referred to him in derogatory terms.

In an open letter shared on his social media page, Omokri expressed surprise at Davido’s reaction, describing it as disappointing given the singer’s international status.

Omokri said the exchange stemmed from his earlier comments defending President Bola Tinubu over allegations raised by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, regarding the repatriation of Nigerian prisoners from Ethiopia.

He suggested that Davido’s reaction may have been influenced by his criticism of the singer’s remarks on insecurity in Nigeria during the ongoing FIFA World Cup, as well as Obi’s public support for Davido’s position.

Defending his stance, Omokri argued that discussions about terrorism on major international platforms could inadvertently amplify the visibility of criminal groups. He contrasted Davido’s approach with that of American content creator IShowSpeed, whom he said used a global platform to promote Nigeria positively.

Omokri further referenced international incidents, including the October 7, 2023, abduction of hostages in Israel and the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls’ kidnapping, arguing that excessive global attention could complicate rescue efforts and strengthen terrorist organisations.

He also cited former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and UNESCO guidance on terrorism reporting to support his position.

Omokri appealed for understanding from Davido, stating that the singer’s comments should be “beneath” him, given his global influence.

“You are an international celebrity whom Nigeria is proud of,” he wrote. “Coming to insult me on my Instagram profile with such vulgar words should be beneath you.”

He added that his comments about security issues on international platforms were intended as a caution against giving undue publicity to banditry and terrorism.

The exchange follows Omokri’s recent appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he addressed claims about delays in his diplomatic posting to Mexico, dismissing reports that he was rejected by Mexican authorities.

He maintained that the delay in resumption was linked to the ongoing FIFA World Cup co-hosted by the United States and Mexico.
