Nigeria @65: Sokoto Students Demand Reform In Education System

As Nigeria marked its 65th Independence Anniversary, secondary school students in Sokoto state used the occasion to demand reforms in the nation’s education system.

The students proposed a departure from the traditional five-day classroom schedule to a model of “three days in class and two days in the vocational centers,” which they argued would balance academic studies with practical experience.

This was canvassed at the Best Brain Competition and inter-school debate organized by Amazing Fame Concepts in Sokoto.

The competition, which drew many schools in Sokoto, provided a platform for young participants to debate national issues and showcase intellectual skills.

At the event, David Agbonyin, Chief Executive Officer of Devkem, said his sponsorship stemmed from a deep passion for education and youth development.

He added that the contest reflected the aspirations of Sokoto’s youth for a more dynamic education system.

“Their call for a ‘three days in class, two days on the field’ model underscores a growing demand to align learning with real-world experience.”

He added that such initiatives not only nurture critical thinking and patriotism but also steer young people away from drug abuse and social vices.

Agbonyin urged more private sector players to support education, stressing that “the government cannot do it alone.”

The convener, Comrade Ola Matthew, explained that the contest was created to encourage critical thinking, reading culture, and public speaking among students.

He disclosed that the long-term plan is to expand the contest across the North-West region.
