Nnamdi Kanu: Security Operatives Disperse Sowore-Led Protesters In Abuja

A joint detachment of defence and security operatives on Monday dispersed protesters led by activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, who had gathered in the Maitama area of Abuja to demand the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The protesters, who converged near the headquarters of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), chanted solidarity songs and carried placards bearing “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now.”

Among the protesters were Sowore, human rights lawyer Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, and other supporters of the detained separatist leader.

The group cautioned security agents against the use of force moments before the situation escalated.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to THE WHISTLER on the condition of anonymity said the protesters were heard warning the police not to teargas them.

“We are peaceful, don’t shoot, don’t teargas us,” one of the protesters shouted before the sound of gunfire echoed through the area, causing people to flee in different directions.

“The next thing we heard were gunshots — people started running, everyone was trying to take cover,” an eyewitness recounted.

Workers and non-protesters were also dispersed with teargas in front of the Appeal Court, by men of the Nigeria Police Force.

Meanwhile, heavy traffic has paralysed movement across parts of Abuja as soldiers mounted roadblocks. Residents of Karu, Nyanya, Aya, Dutse Alhaji, and nearby areas were affected.

Motorists are also trapped around the AYA Bridge as access routes leading to the Court of Appeal, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Women’s Affairs were blocked.

Commuters are rerouting through the road connecting the CBN headquarters and Nicon Luxury Hotel.

As of the time of filing this report, the Wuse, Maitama, and Mabushi routes remained accessible to road users.
