Obama’s Anti-Racism Tweet Is Most Liked In Twitter History

Former U.S President Barack Obama’s tweet condemning racism in reaction to an attack in Charlottesville, Virginia, has become the most liked tweet ever.

The tweet has been liked more than 2.9 million times on the social network, behind a tweet from Ariana Grande following the attack at her concert in Manchester in May, according to the CNN.

Obama’s reaction to the Charlottesville attack is also the fifth-most retweeted tweet.

Quoting former South African President, Nelson Mandela’s 1994 autobiography “Long Walk to Freedom”, the tweet read: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

Far-right protesters opposing the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee from Emancipation Park rallied in Charlottesville on Saturday. Many waved burning torches and wore Nazi or other white supremacist regalia. They were met with counter-protests from antifascist campaigners, who were targeted by a man who drove a car into a group, killing civil rights activist Heather Heyer and injuring several more.
