Saudi Arabia Sights Dhul Hijjah Moon, Eid-ul-Kabir Confirmed For June 16

The sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhul Hijjah was confirmed in Saudi Arabia today, according to an announcement from the Royal Court. This means the Islamic holy month of Dhul Hijjah will begin tomorrow, Friday, June 7.

The five-day spiritual exercise will commence on Friday, June 14, while the Day of Arafah, considered the holiest day in Islam, and the peak of Hajj, is June 15 and Eid Al Adha, the Feast of Celebration, also known as Eid-ul-Kabir, comes up on June 16.

The news brings excitement to residents of Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, who traditionally receive a long weekend for these holidays.

In the UAE, this translates to a one-day break for Arafah Day (June 15) followed by a three-day Eid Al Adha holiday (June 16 to 18).

Dhul Hijjah is a significant month in the Islamic calendar, culminating in the sacred Hajj pilgrimage and Eid Al Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice.

Eid Al-Adha is a time for special prayers, reflection, and celebrating Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering faith.

The holiday commemorates his willingness to sacrifice his son as instructed by Allah, ultimately being provided with a ram to slaughter in his son’s place.

Muslims traditionally mark the occasion by sacrificing livestock, with the meat distributed to those in need.
