Tomato Ebola: Institute Develops Vaccine For Pest

The National Research Institute for Chemical Technology (NARICT), Zaria, Kaduna state, has announced that it has developed a vaccine for tuta absoluta, a pest also known as tomato ebola.

This was disclosed by the institute’s public relations officer, Bala Aliyu, on Thursday.

Aliyu, who said that the end had come for the disease which have been made tomatoes scarce in the last two months, added that the institute worked extensively to provide a solution to the pest.

“This vaccine has been found to be very effective after undergoing various scientific testing,” he said.

While revealing that the vaccine would be launched soon, the institute’s spokesperson said that that it was the responsibility of the federal government to ensure the vaccine gets the end-users, farmers.

He further revealed that NARICT was partnering with regulatory agencies to certify the vaccine for onward use by farmers in Nigeria and the world at large.

“We will work with the state and federal government agencies to diffuse this important development to our teeming farmers in the country and beyond,” Aliyu said.
