Two Killed, Others Injured In Lagos Auto Crashes

Two people were killed and two others injured in two separate accidents that occurred in Lagos in the early hours of Monday.

The first fatal crash happened around 2:30 a.m. at Otedola Bridge inward Berger on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

According to the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, preliminary findings revealed that an unregistered vehicle with two occupants was travelling at high speed when it rammed into a heavily laden moving trailer.

The force of the impact reportedly led to the immediate death of both occupants, while the trailer driver fled the scene with the vehicle.

“Preliminary intelligence from the Otedola Bridge incident reveals that an unregistered vehicle, bearing two occupants including the driver was travelling at an egregiously unlawful and hazardous velocity when it collided with tremendous force into a moving heavily-laden trailer at approximately 2:30 a.m.

“The sheer violence of the impact proved fatal, culminating in the instantaneous demise of both occupants. In a disturbing twist, the operator of the involved trailer absconded from the scene with the articulated vehicle,” Adebayo said in a statement.

Following the incident, he said LASTMA’s Night-Gang surveillance team, stationed in the Otedola corridor, arrived promptly to remove the bodies from the expressway and clear the wreckage to prevent further danger.

Officers from the Isheri Police Division supported the operation, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) handled the evacuation of the remains.

A second crash occurred around 5:00 a.m. on the Third Mainland Bridge, near the UNILAG waterfront inward Lagos Island.

The accident involved an empty tanker and a pure-water distribution van.

Two individuals sustained severe injuries and were stabilised by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and described the accidents as avoidable tragedies caused by dangerous speed violations.

He stressed the importance of compliance with approved speed limits, stating that adherence could prevent unnecessary loss of lives on Lagos roads.

Bakare-Oki commended LASTMA’s Night-Gang Teams for their swift and professional response, reaffirming that the agency will continue its 24-hour surveillance and rapid-response operations in alignment with the Lagos State Government’s commitment to safety and orderly transportation.

THE WHISTLER reports that today’s incident occurred less than a week after a police officer and a scavenger were killed on Wednesday when a speeding driver lost control and rammed into them at Ilubirin, inward Simpson, on Lagos Island.

It was gathered that the driver, who was driving a Toyota Camry, was travelling at an excessive and dangerous speed when he veered off his lane and struck the victims, a scavenger and a police officer who was on a motorcycle.

Both died instantly from the impact.
