U.S Designates Muslim Brotherhood In Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, As Terrorist Organisations

The United States has officially designated the Muslim Brotherhood chapters in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon as terrorist organisations.

In a statement on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the move follows President Donald Trump’s directive to dismantle the operational and financial networks of Muslim Brotherhood factions deemed a threat to American interests and global security.

According to the State Department, the Lebanese Muslim Brotherhood has been classified as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) entity. Its leader, Muhammad Fawzi Taqqosh, was also placed under SDGT sanctions.

At the same time, the US Treasury Department announced the designation of the Egyptian and Jordanian branches of the Muslim Brotherhood as SDGTs, accusing both groups of providing material support to Hamas.

Rubio said the designations represent the first phase of what he described as a “sustained and comprehensive effort” to curb the influence of Muslim Brotherhood networks involved in violence and regional destabilisation.

“The United States will employ all available tools to cut off these organisations from the resources they use to support terrorism,” the Secretary of State said.

He added that the measures will involve coordinated actions across government agencies to freeze assets, restrict travel, and impose financial penalties on individuals and entities linked to the affected groups.
