W/Cup: Switzerland Beat Algeria 2-0

Switzerland secured their first FIFA World Cup knockout victory in 88 years after defeating Algeria 2-0 to book a place in the round of 16.

Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye were on target as Murat Yakin’s men produced a composed display to end a long wait for a knockout triumph, having last achieved the feat with a victory over Germany at the 1938 World Cup.

The Swiss made the perfect start, taking the lead in the 10th minute through Embolo. The goal came after an impressive run down the flank by Johan Manzambi, who beat his marker before cutting the ball back for the Rennes striker to finish from close range.

Switzerland extended their advantage just 46 seconds into the second half when Nottingham Forest winger Dan Ndoye finished confidently inside the box to put the contest firmly under their control.

Algeria, seeking a first-ever World Cup knockout stage victory, showed glimpses of promise before the break but struggled to create meaningful opportunities. Their best chance fell to Fares Chaibi, whose tame effort was comfortably gathered by Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

The Swiss continued to dominate proceedings and came close to adding a third goal late in the game. Fabian Rieder found himself unmarked at the back post but failed to make proper contact with the ball, allowing Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane to make a routine save.

The victory also marked the first time Switzerland had scored more than once in a World Cup knockout match since their dramatic 7-5 quarter-final defeat to Austria in 1954.

Captain Granit Xhaka marked his 150th appearance for Switzerland with another commanding midfield display, dictating the tempo as his side controlled the contest from start to finish.

Manzambi was once again one of Switzerland’s standout performers. After scoring three goals during the group stage, the 20-year-old provided his second assist of the tournament with the brilliant run that created Embolo’s opener, continuing his impressive World Cup campaign.
